Last Friday, April 30th, members of Houston coalition for life and other pro-life groups came out to make their presence known outside a Planned Parenthood gala at the Corinthian Hotel celebrating the opening of their new facility here in Houston.

Starting at Annunciation Catholic church, they walked to the hotel and lines the streets of the four corners of the intersection right by the hotel. Pictures don’t do the turnout justice. I was just able to get the portions I could see from where I was.

This coming from Steven Lopez on the continuing saga of David Allen

Hi folks,

It was a very interesting couple of days in court. David Allen faced the State of Texas bravely and was able to articulate to the jurors and multiple Planned Parenthood employees that God loved them. Due to the uniqueness of the trial the room was filled with District Attorneys who also heard that God loved them.

David was even allowed to blow his shofar in the courtroom — something I would never have predicted.

It turns out that Judge Fields is also an ordained minister. At the end of the trial he said, “David you’re the nicest guy I’ve ever met. I’m not sure what to do with you?”

The jury found David guilty of criminal trespass. However, the punishment was left in the hands of Judge Fields who chose not to issue any fines and took the unprecedented step of being David’s probation officer. In the end, David ended up with a better result than what the the DA’s office was offering if he didn’t go to trial.

David can still blow his shofar outside of the Planned Parenthood so long as he stays 15 feet away from the entrance and in a couple months he will have no restrictions.

Several members of the District Attorneys office told us that this was a difficult trial for them since they’re pro life. The chief investigator for the District Attorney’s office, officer Jimmy Jones, is also pro life and has 10 children. He was wearing a pro life pin and bracelet throughout the trial.

Prior to the trial there was a law firm who offered to represent David and he accepted their offer. However, days before the trial they withdrew their offer and David was forced to represent himself. When we entered the courtroom we were surprised to see standing by David’s side attorney Brian E. Storts, a managing partner of RAB Law Firm. He had come into court one day before the trial on unrelated business and Judge Fields said to him, “I have a case where you won’t get paid and you’ll have no time prepare… what do you think?”

After hearing the details of the defendant (David Allen) Mr. Storts agreed to stand beside David and be co-counsel. Mr. Storts did a fantastic job under incredibly difficult circumstances. Ironically we spent a lot of time trying to find an attorney for David, but God had already appointed one. I suspect that Mr. Storts willingness to show up to the battlefield despite incredible odds will be greatly rewarded.

We also met another attorney who offered his services despite limited exposure to criminal court, Brent Haynes. He was present throughout the trial and attended the pro life rally outside of the Corinthian. We were inspired to see the courage of these two attorneys.

Thank you for all of your prayers and support, David is still smiling and serving God.

Steve Susman signs the Contract

Ryan Hecker addresses the ceremony

Friday, April 30th, an event was organized through the Greater Houston Tea local coalition for the signing of the “Contract from America“. The contract is the brainchild of Houston Tea Party Society‘s Ryan Hecker and developed in a bottom-up process from the input of almost a half million americans. It is an attempt to tell congress exactly what initiatives they want to see accomplished.

Congressman John Culberson (TX 7) was the first Texas member of Congress to sign the Contract, and the only one in person on Friday. Congressmen Michael McCaul (TX 10) and Pete Olson (TX 22) who were unable to attend, sent signed copies of the Contract to Greater Houston Tea. All of the other members of the Houston area delegation have been invited to sign, but have not yet done so.

Candidates who gave up their morning and attended, signed, and took questions from those in attendance were: David Smith – CD 2, Bruce West – CD 8, Steve Mueller – CD 9, John Faulk – CD18 and Steve Susman – CD 22.

Culberson and Mueller mingle with the crowd

Only issue that came up was John Culberson objected to some of the language on #9, placing a moratorium on all earmarks. He argued that a moratorium on earmarks would leave directing funds to unelected administration bureaucrats, and gave a good argument why that may be a bad idea.

David Smith and Steve Susman, Libertarian candidates

Wikipedia actually has a good entry on earmarks to help people better understand. Developers of the contract have told me they will be looking into the language of that specific line based on further research and feedback. Ryan also explained to the signers and audience that these are simply promises that they will bring these initiatives up for a vote shortly after a majority of signers are elected into congress.

It was not the only feedback that was recieved either. Bruce West and Steve Susman said the contract went along with their campaigns, and brought a list of things they said were additions to their their promises in signing the contract.

Past that, I’m very hopeful about the future of the contract and what effects it will have on politics this year and in the future.

Two big events regarding Houston Politics and Culture are happening tomorrow.

The first is The Houston Tea Party Society and the Greater Houston Tea regional alliance hosting a signing with elected officials and candidates with the Contract From America.

http://houstontps.org/?p=1296

The Contract from America is a grassroots-generated, crowd-sourced, bottom-up call for real economic conservative and good governance reform in Congress.

The initiative was developed within the decentralized tea party and 912 movements. Ryan Hecker, a Houston Tea Party Society activist, developed the concept of creating a grassroots-generated call for reform prior to the April 15, 2009 Tax Day Tea Party rallies.

Following their participation in the nationwide launch of the initiative, Greater Houston Tea is proud to host  a public signing by Congress members and Congressional candidates of the Contract From America:

Date:                     Friday, April 30

Time:                    10:00 a.m.

Place:                    Crowne Plaza Reliant

8686 Kirby Dr.

Houston TX 77054

The event is RSVP-only, and space is limited, so please e-mail info@houstontps.org to reserve seats with the names and numbers attending.

So far John Culberson and John Faulk are committed to sign with more entries coming soon.

The next is a Prayer Vigil for Life outside of a Planned Parenthood Gala

Planned Parenthood’s move into their new facility appears imminent!

Planned Parenthood of Houston & Southeast Texas is now saying that they will move into their new late-termabortion facility later next week.

This new abortion facility will provide abortions through 25 weeks of pregnancy . . . that’s six months!

Unborn children have been born at this stage and survived!

Join us this Friday for a peaceful and legal procession and prayer vigil outside the hotel where their gala will take place.

We will march in prayer from Annunciation Catholic Church to the Corinthian Hotel.

We must stand up and unite in prayer outside of this disgraceful grand opening celebration for a late-term abortion facility.

Date: Friday April 30th, 2010.
Time: 5:30PM Gather in the parking lot of Annunciation Catholic Church at 1618 Texas St.
We will also be parking in the LAM parking lot at 1624 Capitol across from Incarnate Word Academy.
6:00PM Ecumenical prayer procession will begin to the Corinthian Hotel at 202 Fannin (a walk of one-half mile).
7:30PM Return in prayer to Annunciation Catholic Church.

Please make an effort to attend this most important prayer vigil and please wear RED.

Because young children will be in attendance, please do not bring graphic signs. Signs will be provided, but please keep in mind ourprayers are the most important aspect of this march.

We must let Houston and the rest of the country know that abortion is not accepted by the majority of the people and that we will stand up and speak out in defense of the unborn and their mothers.

Also, please RSVP by e-mailing Staff@HoustonCoalition.com so that we have an idea as to the number of people who will be attending.

If possible, please try to attend both and be counted!

From Dale Huls:

Josh,

The Clear Lake Tea Party is hosting a golf tournament fundraiser called “Hitting the Links for Liberty.” The purpose of this fundraiser is to raise operating capital for the CLTP in order to rent venues; buy flyers, bumper stickers, T-shirts, etc.; and purchase public advertising.

I think that this may be the type of local event the Houston Grind may be interested in reporting on. We are trying to move past just calling for donations but are looking to move into more sophisticated fundraising to sponsor tea party activities. We are getting stronger but need to raise funds to be able to get our message out and make a difference.

I have attached a flyer to this email that you can post. If you have any questions regarding this just give me a call.

The Houston Property Rights Association hosted Randal O’Toole last Friday at the Courtyard Restaurant in the Galleria Area. There was a very large turnout and a lunch was provided to the guest with the price of admission. The crowd included those who were known local conservative activists, but also included people who wore “Green Party” pins.

Barry Klein opened the meeting and touched on a few subjects. The recent denial of funds to Houston Metro Rail due to false reporting was the biggest subject. After all this, the the featured speaker, Mr. Randal O’Toole of the Cato Institute, was introduced.

O’Toole has done much research into rail transportation and his message is that it’s simply obsolete and does little to actually increase mobility of citizens despite the high cost of implementing it. O’Toole’s presentation showed that high costs, low ridership, and failures of commercial and residential development meant to compliment the rail.

It was hardly dry at all, O’Toole actually made it quite entertaining. He made it seem like rail in this day and age was a ridiculous idea, which was hard not to laugh at. Best line was when he pointed out the silliness of the Obama Administration wanting to put in a rail line from Cheyenne, Wyoming, to El Paso.

O’Toole’s solution to transportation woes was the message that cars were becoming more and more fuel efficient and able to drive themselves. This would lead to less traffic congestion and actual better mobility in cities and highways. It was hard to beleive at first, but then Randal went through slides of actual examples of the technology actually being used and developed.

It was a great presentation, and with the fallout of Metro Rail’s woes being in the headline, probably needs to be given more exposure to the citizens of Houston.

From Barry Klein of Houston Property Rights Association:

Houston’s transit authority has been buying property, removing structures, relocating utilities and doing other kinds of preliminary construction in three corridors in anticipation of $900 million in grants to help fund the North and Southeast lines. It has now been announced by the Federal Transit Administration that it will not be help fund those two corridors until it is confident that Metro can afford to take on the projects and maintain its system. That might be never if the new lower sales tax projections hold true.

Now Metro has an interesting problem. The third line in which work has begun, called the Harrisburg or East End line, connects to the Southeast line at the eastern edge of the Houston CBD. This is a project that Metro is building without FTA help. If the Southeast Line is not built the Harrisburg Line has no way to connect to the existing Main Street (Red Line). Obviously Metro should not issue further contracts to continue construction of the Harrisburg line lest it be left with an orphan rail line that goes nowhere.

Metro plans three more light rail lines and two, the University Line and Uptown, are part of this funding phase (a Washington Avenue line will come later). But with two lines in doubt the ridership assumptions for all remaining lines will probably have to be revised.

Kudos to KHOU’s Mark Greenblatt, who stands almost alone in this town as a reporter with the courage to beard the lion. and it is sweet to see him gig Metro vice president George Smalley who proves himself to be very, very unreliable.

A strange thing happened yesterday… Many conservative grassroots activists tired of how the HCRP is run are trying to get Ed Hubbard elected so the Harris County Republican Party has a chance of getting competitive again. While not outright endorsed by local Tea Party orgs, who have it in their code of conduct not to endorse as organizations, many of the Tea Party individuals and leaders are giving personal support to Ed, making him the default Tea Party favorite. I’m out here now in Precinct 58 with Ed Hubbard pushcards, writing this in the downtime.

Meanwhile, the opposition camp has Dan Patrick robocalls going out, in contrary to where the conservative grassroots are heading, giving the tired old dopey “Every Conservative in the County supports Jared!” (Meaning: What the heck is wrong with you if you don’t then?!) and then goes into outright calumny implying that Ed is “trying to take the party to the left”.

Bull, Dan! Ed’s not trying to the the Party left, he’s trying to build the Machine it takes to win elections again. However, as I saw someone point out earlier, YOU are trying to go to the left with some fuzzy-headed argument that the State Legislature meets more often. Please! They do enough damage with the time they have already! What happened to the guy that ran promising to be the most conservative guy ever?

Now, while trying to help the desperate fight to keep the ineffective status quo in power, Dan announces that he’s forming his own “party” because the Republicans are ineffective and “just can’t keep guys like him accountable” made up of his hand-picked friends from the Texas Legislature. Talk about Foxes guarding the Hen-house… Brandon de Hoyos shows how little credibility this scheme has

Senator Patrick then goes on the Laura Ingraham radio show to talk about it, he mentions it’s a contract, and bills it as something to help appease and make the bridge to those angry Tea Party people and they’ll keep their word!

Hey, I thought we already had something like that, Ryan Hecker of Houston Tea Party Society’s Contract From America. Except… that came from the bottom up, with a process that included the grassroots, with the people holding them to account… but what do we slobs know?

Why bother with the grassroots when the politicians can just write up their own contract with themselves and make us trust them to hold themselves accountable to it?

Yeah… I feel just great about that…

Ed Hubbard at the last Houston Young Republican's Happy Hour

-

The race for the Chairman of the Harris County Republican Party heated up with Bob Perry dumping $20,000 into both the campaigns of Incumbent Jared Woodfill and Challenger Ed Hubbard.

I’m firmly in the Hubbard camp. I’m not what could be considered a “Party Moderate”. I’m a proud Tea Partier and fiscally conservative and very Pro-Life. Admittedly I don’t care if you’re gay, which would put me apart from Woodfill supporters who want them shut out and if you’re merely tolerant, count you as “Pro-Homosexual” and participating in “The Spirit of the Devil”. These hateful and divisive shenanigans certainly don’t endear me to some of them.

Which is why I’m lately incredibly offended but these chump’s attempt to try to paint Hubbard as “Not Pro-Life” or even the accusation he enables people that “want to rip the pro-life plank from the Platform”. The “evidence” to back this up is that “He has no record”. A ballsy and cheap claim… Neither Hubbard or Woodfill have any kind of voting record on the issue.

First off, this accusation is ridiculous simply because it has nothing to do with the job of County Party Chairman. The job of the Chair is to get the candidates elected in November. The Chair does not drive policy debate. I support Hubbard because I believe he is better able to deliver on getting the candidates elected. What good is pro-life when the pro-life candidates get their clock’s cleaned at the ballot box, as they do under Woodfill.

As to being pro-life, here’s the evidence:

Hubbard’s Answer to the “Conservative Coalition of North/Northwest Harris County”:
http://www.conservativecoalitionhc.org/answers/2010-3-HC-CountyChair-Ed.Hubbard.pdf

9. Should Roe v. Wade be overturned? Why or why not?

Yes
Comments: I am pro-life, and I believe in the principle of federalism. This decision violates both principles.

Hubbard’s own words: http://hubbardforhcrp.blogspot.com/2010/03/response-to-terry-lowry-we-republicans.html

I first met Terry in early 2008, and through discussions with him I know we agree on much: we support the platform of the Republican Party of Texas; we are pro-life; and we want to protect the traditional family from the political and legal assault promoted by Democratic-aligned interests groups. He knows that I am not an ally of pro-abortion politics or the “homosexual” political and legal agenda.

So what’s the Deal? Sorry… but but the portrayal of Ed Hubbard as less than pro-life, not conservative, or supported by party moderates, is a total lie, and those that peddle this junk are total liars. They might a well be saying Ed Hubbard will paint the sky red and change the party symbol to the porcupine while they’re at it. They’re merely flinging crap hoping it sticks.

Received this interesting e-mail, which I had permission to repost. First off… As someone who has organized protests myself, I cannot condone what Mr. Allen did in crossing the fenceline onto the property, nor would any of the local pro-life organizations either. Disobeying the rules makes it more difficult for other activists, and the ones being protested against find it especially threatening and have something else to hold against them. I think this was very unwise, and unfortunately, the consequences of that action now have to play out…

Past that, this is still a very compelling story, and very good reason to keep David Allen in your prayers for mercy, and the cause he defends.

To whom it may concern,

My name is Steven Lopez and I’ve been shooting a documentary on 40
Days for Life for nearly two years. In the course of volunteering and
shooting the documentary I met a gentleman named David Allen. He is
someone that sticks out in my mind among the hundreds, if not
thousands, of courageous pro lifers we’ve met during the last three
campaigns.

He is someone you don’t easily forget primarily because he blows a
ram’s horn. I’m no expert, but most people are impressed with his
ability to sound the trumpet.

He then smiles and tells onlookers that he is knocking down “spiritual
walls”. It wasn’t until I learned his motivation for blowing that horn
that he became forever etched in my memory.

One day he arrived with his ram’s horn tucked under his arm with his
usual smile… but on this particular day he approached the Planned
Parenthood volunteers in their bright yellow vests to tell them that
God loves them. And then he went on to say, “You know when I was a
teenager I was the first in line. Back in 1973 I came to Planned
Parenthood with my girlfriend and we killed our son… and his name is
Samuel. But God has forgiven me, and he can forgive you too.”

I don’t remember what he said after that because he was crying too
hard to make out the words. And in that moment his horn and its sounds
took on a whole new meaning. The grief that David feels even thirty
seven years later is captured in the form of a ram’s horn. If only it
could bring back his son.

But the story didn’t end there.

A couple weeks later we went to the new facility Planned Parenthood of
Southeast Texas is building near the University of Houston, which
happens to be the largest abortion clinic in the western hemisphere.
We were not shooting any footage that day, but a friend of ours who
had never seen the facility asked if we would meet him there. When we
arrived we were told that the police were on their way because David
Allen had blown the horn inside the fence near the new building.

He had just left before we arrived… the police were on the scene
shortly thereafter.

Planned Parenthood does not like David blowing his horn near their
building which is still under the final stages of construction. In
fact, charges were formally brought against David a couple of days
ago. When I emailed David and asked if he had an attorney he replied,
“You know my testimony from 1973 – and it may be that my defense rests
in the repentance and understanding of His forgiveness for even this
grievous sin. After all the people they have hurt and continue to
hurt, what standing do they have to bring charges? I am trusting that
the exact words will come at the proper time – but they cannot come
from men. Be encouraged – and continue to stand faithfully! Stay in
touch, we will rejoice together in the victory!“

Not everyone agrees with the sound of a ram’s horn, but none of us
agree with innocent babies having their lives stolen. Ironically, the
doctors who perform thousands of abortions each day will not stand
before the same TX judge that David Allen will be facing. However,
just like the Philistines before them abortionists and their army of
attorneys underestimate the power of faith. David wasn’t standing
alone when he put that stone into a sling and slayed the giant.

And David Allen isn’t standing alone as he faces the largest abortion
provider in the United States.

On the morning of Saturday, March 27th, around 100 local activists met in the parking lot of Holy Rosary Parish to prepare for a “Mini-March”. Organized by Kin Muncy, the “The March of the Surviving Youth” was to remember the third of this generation killed or effected by abortion.

They then marched over to the Planned Parenthood clinic on Fannin, which already had a crowd around 50 people already there. They then marched around the building 7 times, singing hymns, and stopped to blow horns after each rotation.

Very good turn out for the event. Many members of Houston Coalition for life were there, and they created quite a crowd in a very visible location. A few chuckles were heard when a Planned Parenthood escort went by the crowd with some visitors and muttered “Just ignore them…” It would have been hard not to.

Thanks to Lori Lett for the Pictures.
